In continuation of their protest across the country, Nigerian youths from the North Central region, operating under the banner of the North Central Progressive Voice, in conjunction with Middle Belt Forum for Good Governance converged in Makurdi, the capital of Benue, to voice their grievances against what they perceive as an abuse of the rule of law by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The group, which represents various communities across the North Central states, called for immediate intervention from President Bola Tinubu concerning the recent actions of the EFCC towards former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and other individuals.
In a world press conference held in Makurdi on Wednesday 1st of May, 2024, at the Benue capital, the group’s spokesperson Dr Adole Samson Esq, passionately addressed the media, denouncing the EFCC’s raid on Alhaji Yahaya Bello’s residence in Abuja.
Urging President Tinubu to rein in the EFCC, Dr Adole emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and preventing any potential national embarrassment stemming from the ongoing face-off between the immediate past governor of Kogi and EFCC.
In addition to the press conference, The North Central Progressive Voice penned an open letter to President Tinubu, appealing for his swift intervention in the matter.
The group highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasising the need for a resolution to prevent further escalation.
Taking proactive steps to ensure their message reaches the highest echelons of power, representatives of the group delivered the open letter to the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia Iormem with the intention of forwarding it to President Bola Tinubu for prompt action.
Undeterred by the challenges ahead, the group embarked on a solidarity walk through the major streets of Makurdi Benue, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to their cause.
Their message echoed loudly as they insisted that they would not rest until President Tinubu intervenes, demanding that the EFCC adhere to the principles of the rule of law in the ongoing dispute with Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
As the nation watches closely, the actions of The North Central Progressive Voice serve as a reminder of the power of grassroots movements and the importance of safeguarding democratic principles in Nigeria.
